Out in the wild wind and snow yesterday, I stopped to check the
ponds along Spring Road near Oxford and found over a dozen Gadwall resting
there. In Oxford, the resident Coot was in its usual spot near the
waterfront.
Today a visit to Pickering Creek was rewarded with a sighting of a
Winter Wren (as previously reported by George Jett) and an Osprey (found
with the help of Helen Horrocks and Gary Smyle and others from up in Lapwing
territory). The Frederick County folks were hoping for a sighting of the
Northern Shrike, but the shrike stayed out of sight.
As I came down my driveway on the way home, a large flock of geese
in the adjacent field somehow caught my attention so I stopped and inspected
them with care. Amongst the 1000 or so Canada Geese was a single Greater
White-fronted Goose (Greenland subspecies). I suspect this is the same bird
that was present here for a few days around Jan 15th. It moved elsewhere
after that, and now is on its way back towards the north. Many people
sought it shortly after Jan 15, without success, so it seems likely that the
bird has been 'elsewhere' for the past couple of months.
The past two days I did 'Feeder Watch'. Highlights: Fox Sparrow,
Brown Thrasher, American Goldfinch (33), Blue Jay (26), White-throated
Sparrow (60), Song Sparrow (5), Eastern Towhee (3 - a total of 29 species
recorded, which is about as many as I have ever had for feeder-watch.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Some notes about list etiquette

I believe we've had enough discussion of Lapwing birding ethics for now,
along with the carping at each other for not fully agreeing with each
other's points of view. Let's get back to some bird posts.

Please note--requests for birding information for sites not in Maryland
should not be responded to on the list. Send your responses directly to the
individual asking for the information.

Finally, please note that I want everyone who posts to MDOsprey to use a
signature block at the end of their message (see below) giving us your name,
location, and e-mail address.

Thanks everyone for helping out with these requests.
