Sorry for my late entry into this, but I've been using the backpack type 
tripod carrying system for three years and it's excellent for birding.  I have 
a Leica 70mm which weighs 9 pounds plus a heavy weight tripod.  As stated 
before, it allows me to carry my tripod with little effort and have my hands 
free for my binoculars.
