SHOREBIRD RESEARCH AND MONITORING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Delaware
Shorebird Monitoring Program is seeking skilled and motivated volunteers
to aid in shorebird research and monitoring activities during April,
May, and June. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work
side-by-side with researchers from around the world studying one of the
most important migratory shorebird concentration areas in North America
and witness close hand the shorebird migration in the Delaware Bay.
Participants will assist researchers with a variety of tasks at various
skill levels including daily bird surveys, banding operations, and many
other aspects of the monitoring program. Though not required for some
tasks, shorebird identification skills and previous banding experience
are highly useful. The base of operations is the Delaware National
Estuarine Research Reserve in Dover, DE. Limited camping space is
available on a first come, first served basis for extended stays and
some food will be provided. Volunteers are required to attend one
training session prior to the field season and commit to at least three
days of volunteer work (weekdays or weekends). Training sessions are
scheduled for April 16 and 30 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Delaware
National Estuarine Research Reserve (818 Kitts Hummock Rd, Dover, DE
19901). For more information about this exciting opportunity or to
register for training please contact Kevin Kalasz, Delaware Division of
Fish and Wildlife, at (302) 653-2880 or by email at
