Sorry, I was in a hurry. My Leica 77 mm APO Scope with heavy duty Bogan
tripod weighs about 9 pounds.
Since I prefer walking while birding, as opposed to drive-by birding, I've
found the backpack style tripod carrier very useful (tri-pack). You can carry
the tripod hands free, so you can use your binoculars.
I strongly recommend the heavier tripods because they are less likely to be
knocked over during intensive birding. More important, they are steadier.
Wind, traffic and excited birder induced vibration greatly reduces optimum
sharpness. Sharpness is what you are paying for. Anybody who has done
serious photography knows that sharpness is more important than power.
I love my scope, I love my tripod, I love my tri-pack, I love the exercise I
get dragging them over hill and dale.
Many, many birders have asked me where I got mine. Here is a link to the ABA
site and the pack. I believe they're available through Eagle also.
