Hi all,
The scheduled Blue Mash field trip this morning went ahead as usual, with 6
participants plus myself. Lots of liquid sunshine!
We had about 32 species, with best finds being 3 swallow species (Tree, N.
Rough-winged and Barn), a flyby GREAT EGRET, 2 (yellow) Palm Warblers, one
singing, ducks including Green-winged Teal, A. Black, Mallard, Ring-necked, and
Bufflehead. We searched the wet woods for Rusty Blackbirds, finding none, but
as we exited the area, a small group of 7 landed in a big tree. Singing Fox
Sparrows were seen and heard.
After breaking up early, 4 of us headed up to Triadelphia Reservoir and the
Greenbridge fire road (we obviously weren't wet enough!), where we had 3
Red-breasted Mergansers (I saw the same 3 earlier this week, a male and 2
females), and a small group of Common Mergs flew in. The eagles nest was not visible
in the gloom. The Red-necked Grebe I saw earlier in the week was not seen
either.
This trip would have been postponed until Sunday except we had a visiting
birder from Wisconsin, and he couldn't stay for Sunday. I don't think we
impressed him though, except for our heavy volume of rains, which was impressive
even to me...
