During the brief respite from the rain on Saturday morning (8:30-10am), I
had some good fortune while hiking around Roosevelt Island. In/over the
channel between the western side of the island and the Virginia shoreline I
saw an numerous (more than 10) double crested cormorants. Also spotted an
osprey, which hovered over the channel just south of the Roosevelt Bridge,
then circled and plucked a fish out of the channel and flew south along the
river.
Also, saw two barn swallows (from the bridge heading back to the VA side),
a downy woodpecker, a red-bellied woodpecker, an eastern phoebe, many
mallards and a carolina chickadee before the rains returned. |
