While on a Maryland Native Plant Society walk in Anacostia on Sunday, April 3, we discovered a very large Bald Eagle nest in the vicinity of St. Elizabeths Hospital. Our group diverted from the walk to gain a viewpoint at a higher elevation, and confirmed that an adult was sitting in the nest. Note that this nest is inside the District of Columbia.

The Bald Eagle nest on the Virginia side of the river across from Sycamore Island (near Glen Echo) has failed after weeks of sitting. A friend who has a house above Macarthur Blvd. with a view of the nest (and a telescope) called a few days ago to report no activity on the nest. Last year, this pair of Eagles fledged two youngsters.
