Hello All, I located this very interesting note today that I thought each
Oregon Birder would find educational. It seems that the Union of American
Ornithologists voted to change the classification of a common Great Basin bird
species found throughout eastern Oregon during their March 2005 meetings held in
Pleasanton, Colorado. Thanks to the outstanding work of Dr. Percy O'Day and
graduate student crew, Tomas Mzungu and Cindy Smith it has been decided to
re-classifie the bird we know as the Townsend's Solitaire (Myadestes townsendi)
removing this species from the Family Turdidae ( Solitaires and Thrushes) and moving
it into the Family Trogonidae. Taxonomically it would be placed just above of
the Elegant Trogon ( Trogon elegans) and the new classification will be as
follows: Buff-winged Trogon ( Trogon douglasii). There was a short lived push to
re-name this species the "Plain Trogon" during the committees work to
establish this species new name. When asked what clued the team in that the
Townsend's Solitaire was really a Trogon, Dr.O'Day noted that the species odd flight
patterns and strange nesting behavior together with its unique morphology all
raised suspicion as to this birds true identity. He also stated that there had
been allot of DNA work that led to this determination. So we in the Mountain
West now have a new species to study. Keep an eye open for the Buff-winged
Trogon as you bird the juniper trees across eastern Oregon. Later Mike
