Folks
Two more yard year birds arrived today, bringing my yard year list to 67. A single Ovenbird was singing around 11 AM, and about 5 PM a "Brownie" Purple Finch arrived for some sunflower seed. I got crummy photos of the later but easily recognizable.
On April 7 my first Myrtle Warblers passed by the house, and yesterday at least four were present. They are starting to move north in earnest. On April 9 two Double-crested Cormorants fly south, perhaps to the Harry Nice Bridge to nest. A sign of the future. There were several hundred perched on the bridge when I last looked unsuccessfully for the Peregrine Falcons on Saturday.
On April 10 I photographed five of our local woodpeckers from the deck. The only migrant was a female Yellow-belly Sapsucker. The Flickers may be nesting in the area. A number have been present recently, singing up a storm. A male Red-bellied is drilling a cavity in the dead oak just opposite the deck. I am watching for any evidence of nesting.
Spring has arrived.
