Dear volunteers,
Buckingham tree planting set for May 1

The planting of 700 trees will highlight this year’s Coastal Bays tree
planting event. On May 1 at 11 a.m., the conservation work kicks off when
volunteers are invited to Buckingham Elementary on Main Street in Berlin to
assist in the restoration.
The swamp and sugar maples, sycamores, pin oaks, green ashes, red
cedars,
and dogwoods donated by Delmarva Power will be planted along the ditch in a
currently mowed area on the north side of the school.
Those who want to volunteer to restore the school grounds can show up
any
time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and should wear gloves and bring a shovel.
Some shovels will be provided for those who have none.
Coastal Bays Program t-shirts, hats and the Delmarva Bicycling map will
be
available at discount prices. Clubs, schools, and organizations are
encouraged to come.
The site will be forever retained as a forested ditchside buffer,
critical
for improving water quality and providing habitat for native wildlife.
School officials will maintain the site and mulch will be used to
inhibit
noxious weeds. Money for the $5,000 planting is being provided by Worcester
County as part of their use of forest mitigation funds. The moneys are paid
when developers choose to pay into a fund when they take down more than a
certain percentage of forest on their property.
With this event, the Coastal Bays Program will have planted more than
3,000
trees in the coastal bays watershed.
