I took the entire family plus visitors from England up to Hughes Hollow this evening. Not really a birding trip but we got good looks at both the Sora and the Virginia Rail.

The Sora was more or less in its usual spot but was a bit flightier this evening, moving back into the marsh about 15 yards, hanging around a little bit and then disappearing.

We walked along the cross-dike and on the way back, about 70 yards away from the junction with the main dike, saw the Virginia Rail, just down the bank into the wooded swamp. It was feeding close in, and was quite tame, giving great looks. This is roughly where I saw it last week - so I would say this bird is as cooperative as the Sora has been and worth looking for if you are up at Hughes. Definitely the best views I've ever had of this species.

Other than that, not many birds but a very nice evening for a stroll with frogs and Barred Owls for a soundtrack.

Good birding
