Broad-winged Hawks are still migrating through Maryland, although spotting these high flying
raptors is a real challenge. With mostly clear skies and warm temperatures, Broad-winged Hawks
gain altitude quickly by mid to late morning. By noon they may be beyond the view of the un-
aided eye. My method this week has been to lie on my back looking straight up and spotting them
as they pass under a cloud. Even then, with large optics, they are difficult to discern. Only by their
flight behavior, at such altitudes, can we ID them as Broad-winged Hawks!
