Birders,
I've been following the Ivory-billed Woodpecker's rediscovery story on the
listserves, NPR, TNC and Science web postings.
I'm reminded of my first in-depth awareness of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker
from Christopher Cokinos's book, Hope Is the Thing With Feathers. I pulled
the book off my bookshelf to re-read In Search of the Lord God Bird starting
on page 61. If any listserve reader is not aware of this book, I highly
recommend [the whole book] as a must read.
I've looked up the White River N.W.R on the Arkansas map and was surprised
to see that it is only a narrow strip of forest and that it seems fairly
accessible. Let's hope we [birders] conduct ourselves with the dignity the
Lord God Bird deserves.
