Hi all,

Not quite as exciting as the other woodpecker news of the day, but just heard from a birding co-worker that they saw a first-year Red-headed Woodpecker this morning in Meridian Hill Park, near 16th & Euclid in DC. He said "I got to observe it for about 3-4 minutes with good looks. At rest, the bird had dark edging to the white secondaries, but otherwise had an all black upper back, red head and white chest (with faint streaks). I am familar with yellow-bellied sapsuckers and this was not one. Back in Chicago, Red-headed are more common than here, but this one was a bit odd. I can only guess it was molting into
adult plumage."

Cheers,

John
