After online discussions of the Thursday morning Rock
Creek Park DC mystery tern with the two other
observers, it turns out only one thought the bird to
be a tern (the other thinks it is a gull).  She now
thinks it is likely (rather than definitely) a Royal
Tern.  She says it did not have "chunky, bigger headed
look of the Caspian", and that she "never really saw
the bill or the tail and was going by general outline
alone".  I still feel that the bird was likely a
Royal, as I related in an earlier post, but also not
positive.  I apologize for getting my signals crossed
earlier.

Rob,
 That's an extraordinary report. My database shows
only three Piedmont records for Maryland, all in the
fall, and none in DC. Could you see anything of the
shape of the tail as the birds flew over?
