After my patch was birdy this morning, I brought my binoculars to work and
managed to convince Molly Ross to go for a walk down to the D.C. WWI
Memorial and vicinity.
Best bird was a very cooperative adult WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW hanging
around the base of a little pine tree/shrub near the Vietnam Vets
Memorial. Also had Field, Swamp, and Chipping Sparrows in addition to
scads of White-Throats.
The next best birds were 2 BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS in basically the same area
as the White-crowned. In the same area was a song we tentatively ID'ed as
a Prairie Warbler, though we couldn't lay eyes on the bird and I can't
rule out an odd Parula song. Need to do my homework and brush up again on
those warbler songs! Yellow-rumps abounded everywhere and I also heard a
Northern Waterthrush by the WWI Memorial.
Others of interest:
Great-crested Flycatcher
Brown Thrasher (4)
Hermit Thrush (seemingly everywhere, at least 7)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (1 heard)
