Believe it or not, there is a single note sound that a Chipmunk makes that can
fool you.  It's a hollow "toook" note, and is often repeated in a slow series.

Before I knew the call, I actually saw somebody mid-ID it as a cuckoo and then
leave.  It took me a loooonnng time to track it down, but it was a Chipmunk. 
I've seen them doing this call several times since, and I've heard the call
many times.

One good indicator is that if you can determine that the note is coming from
ground level, it's probably not a cuckoo.
