Took a few hours off this morning and walked about 1.5 miles up and back on the stretch of the C&0 canal accessed from Sycamore Landing Rd and then drove out River Rd towards White's Ferry.
The canal was very birdy. Probably 4 different Cerulean Warblers singing. Both waterthrushes: one Louisian on territory, perhaps 10 different Northerns singing. Other warblers include 2 male Prothonotaries counter-singing, many American Redstarts, around 5 or so N. Parula and singles of B/T Blue and B/T Green. Common Yellowthroat were in the more open spots.
A nice walk for thrushes as well. Plenty of Wood Thrush, a distant singing Swainson's, two closer heard but not seen Veery (one singing, the other calling) and then great views of a Grey-cheeked Thrush. I had a chance to observe the bird singing and calling - actually it looked as if it was not opening its beak, but the song was definitely coming from that bird. Also two Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Yellow-billed Cuckoo and a single White-throated Sparrow lurking in a bush.
A lone Wild Turkey crossed River Rd at one of the turf fields. Some breeders - Praire, Yellow warblers, W/E Vireo and Field Sparrow - easy to encounter but it took a while before I heard Y/B Chat and Grasshopper Sparrow.
No Myrtle Warblers seen or heard all day. And I have Blackpolls in the yard but did not come across them while out.
