In preparation for an upcoming field trip, Mom & I ventured to Jeff-Pat Pk in St. Leonard.
The woodland trail was wonderful. Most of the Jack-in-the-Pulpits were a little past their prime. Paw-paw trees were in bloom. At the stream, we got great looks at a very cooperative Acadian Flycatcher in good light - there's an amazing amount of green on the bird. We heard both Wood & Swainson's Thrushes, but never saw either. We did get a very nice look at a Black-billed Cuckoo and heard several Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Warblers included Yellow-rumps, Black & White, Blackpoll, Black-throated Blue, Redstart, Pine, Common Yellowthroat, and great looks at a fairly cooperative Kentucky! Saw several Scarlet Tanagers, but only heard Summer Tanagers. Saw & heard a few other warblers that went unidentified - being in an intensive school program means I haven't birded all spring til now and I'm soooo rusty on warblers.
Another walk down to the river and back had a couple of surprises. 3 Bufflehead and 1 Horned Grebe in breeding plumage - what a nice thing to see! Scared up lots of Chipping Sparrows, a few Towhees, and more of the same warblers.
After spending all spring (we've actually had a nice one this year) hitting the books hard, it was nice to take a walk in the woods with the birds.
