A nice morning at Hughes Hollow, though it was not as birdy as some other spots today.
I had a COMMON MOORHEN visible in the northwest impoundment (the one next to the main parking area) just as I got out of the car. Also heard one calling LEAST BITTERN and saw an AMERICAN COOT at the impoundments. A WOOD DUCK hen with 12 ducklings swam by.
Somewhat unusual sightings for the impoundments (at least in my experience) were a flyover SOLITARY SANDPIPER and 2 CEDAR WAXWINGS. 3 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES were also in the area (plus one more along the towpath; oddly, I only had one LOUISIANA all morning, also on the towpath). There were plenty of YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS and both ORIOLES around.
I briefly heard one YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT in the fields, but had no other particularly interesting warblers--I did not hear Ceruleans on the towpath today.
