Fran and I had wonderful day yesterday doing our May Count in Worcester
County. We birded for about 9 hours and tried to hit a variety of
habitats, ending up the day with 111 species, distributed as below. We
had a pair of large birds fly across West Pond that looked suspiciously
like Anhinga but by the time I was able to grab my scope from the car,
they were gone-- something for people to search for in the coming days,
perhaps. We had a surprising number of winter holdovers, such as Brant,
Purple Sandpiper, Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, and a lone Yellow-
rumped Warbler, but a lot of breeding activity is becoming apparent out on
Skimmer Island and elsewhere.
