Hi all,
When I came home this evening and took the dog for his walk by our storm
water management pond, I witnessed an odd green heron behavior, first and only
time I have ever seen this. An adult green Heron was standing by the far side
of the pond, along a bare edge, and it flew low across the water heading
towards the willows on the other side. About halfway across the bird went into a
half-stall, spreading its wings and attempting to catch a (gold)fish off the
surface. It missed the fish and continued to fly across to the willows. It
landed beneath the trees, then after a brief rest, headed back across the pond
and did it again, this time coming up with a goldfish! It reached the far
shore, ate, and then after another brief rest, repeated the process again, this
time coming up empty. After a bit, it flew off and then came back in chasing
another Green Heron into the trees along the hedgerow.
Anyone ever witness this behavior before? It looked like a Black Skimmer
Green Heron!
