The Black-necked Stilts are still at Deal Island in Somerset County. On
May Count I saw three birds; today four. The birds I saw today seemed to be
two obvious pairs, but neither gave indication of nesting. At one point one
of the "pairs" landed within a few feet of the other pair. The response was
interesting. Two, or more, of the birds would spring vertically 1-2 feet
into the air and seemed to challenge each other. There would be dancing and
jumping, but no direct contact. This went on for about one to two minutes,
at which time one of the "pairs" of birds flew off.
There is also at least on Pied-billed Grebe in the immediate vicinity.
