Okay you herpetologists masquerading as ornithologists...
I was in Washington Co MD on Tuesday and in a stacked woodpile my friend and
I discovered a snake. I had never seen a snake like this before and it I
can't seem to be able to ID it.
The color of the snake was a clear pale gray with no visible markings. The
color was as gray as the light alterna phase of the Gray-banded Kingsnake,
to give you an idea of the color gray. The snake was about a $.50 piece in
diameter at its thickest. The belly, of what I could see, appeared to be
white without markings. The skin was very shiny...ie not a snake about to
shed and the scales were smooth, not keeled. That is all I have to go with.
The snake was very shy and kept coiling and retreating further into the
woodpile(everytime we would life the tarp covering the pile to look at it.)
If I would have been better prepared, I would have gone after it, but I
would have caused my mom to go into a hysterical panic and at my dad's
pleading, I let it retreat into the pile.
So, I have looked at all the ID books I have and nothing fits it at all.
Closest thing I can see is an adult Eastern Ringneck, but I didnt see any
spots on the snake and the diameter was too thick for a snake that only
reaches 30" in length. Also, it had a white belly. Now I guess it could
have been a color variant on a black rat snake.
So if anyone has any ideas of what it might have been, PLEASE repsond to be
OFF LIST at the email address below.
Thanks in advance,
Adam
