I don't know if this is an escapee or a rare one, so here are the details -
 bare with me.

Location - Bladensburg Waterfront Park on Rt. 450 between Kenilworth (201)
and Rt. 1. I viewed it from the boat docks but it was on the other side
of the Anacostia (West Bank) and I didn't have my scope. I just left the
park at 3 pm to run home and type this up and download digital photos.
Ooo. I hope this is something neat and not some lame escapee or common
domesticated goose.

At first I thought it was a Greater White Fronted Goose as I watched swim
up river with a flock of Canadas. On checking my Sibley guide there is no
match. This goose has no bands on its legs or neck.

Description - start with a Greater White Fronted, but with a dark grey or
black bill. There is a little bit of white around the bill. Bigger than
the Canadas by a half to a third. Orange legs, buffy neck with a stripe
down the back of the neck nearly the width of the neck that is a reddish
tan that tapers near the back. Otherwise neck is long like a swan and red
buffy almost a light peach color.

There is a projection on top of the crown that is a yellow tan. This is
not a mild crest in appearance, but knob like projection. Otherwise, the
rest of the description would fit Greater White Fronted in terms of
plumage color and pattern for the breast, belly, back, wings and tail.

I'm working on digital photos.
It was somewhat agreesive with the Canadas but stuck with them. It
extended its neck and vocalized a number of times. The vocalization is
more like a hoarse raspy angry Canada goose. I sure hope someone knows
more about this mystery goose. Thanks!
