When I arrived at LB at about 7:15 this AM, a bird was singing what sounded
to me just like a Blackpoll Warbler song. It was near the top of the big
tree at the parking lot entrance, and persisted for about 5 minutes. I
never got a good look at it, but when it flew up the hill it seemed warbler
sized, and black/white. All my Maryland Blackpoll sightings have been
between May 7 and May 16, so a sighting now must be unlikely. If not a
Blackpoll, what else could it be? What I heard was 10-12 high-pitched
chirps, at a rate of about 4 per second (faster than a Black-and-White
Warbler or a Bay-breasted, and not as squeaky as a Cape May), then repeating
after a pause of about 10 seconds. The recordings sound exactly like that
to me.
Other than that, the only unusual bird I encountered was a heard-only
Kentucky, up the hill (north) from the "dip" in the trail. The L.
Waterthrushes seem to have stopped singing, and the few C. Yellowthroats I
heard were singing a very elaborate song, certainly not "witchety".
