Mid-day last Saturday (6/25) I noticed through my warped kitchen window a bird that appeared to be pecking at a broken limb toward the top of a snag. I assumed it was a Flicker until I glimpsed the long tail, so I grabbed the binocs & went out to the roof for a look.
A male American Kestrel was dining on the stump while being actively harassed by a Robin. Two male Goldfinches and a Cedar Waxwing hovered nearby. The Kestrel finally took off, pursued by the Robin, and the other birds dispersed - to be replaced by 2 Flickers.
Don't know if this has any breeding significance.
