I have to work on July 4th, and while walking to work I saw a tiny heron by Lake K. I saw two Green Herons in the lake yesterday, an adult and an immature. The heron I saw today looked a lot smaller than they were. When I first saw it I thought it was a sandpiper.
I walked pretty close to the bird, about 12 feet, before it flew away, and it didn't 'grow' as I got closer. I would be sure it was a Least Bittern except it was right in the open, standing on a rock. I thought those bitterns were hiding most of time.
