Atlased on the north end of Assateague Island on 07 Jul, from 1430 to 1906.
Few "atlas birds", but several other goodies.
Started doing some ocean watching, a steady stream of Wilson's Storm-Petrels
were headed north, eventually totaled 10 for the day. I then spotted a
distant shearwater, which I believe was a Cory's, but it was way out there.
Fortunately, the next two were quite close to the beach and were clearly
Greaters. Had one Cory's/Greater(sp.) and then two more Greaters later in
the day. This is the first time I have seen Greater Shearwater from land in
MD!
At the "Curlew Sandpiper Flats" was a single adult Roseate Tern in full
breeding plumage, still with a complete black cap, pinkish wash across a
brilliant white breast/underparts, long tail streamers, etc. Seen on the
flats with a Common Tern for 10+ minutes then eventually flew to the north.
Unfortunately, too distant for photos.
Worked by the CS Flats and HUGO Flats for shorebirds with the following
totals:
Black-bellied Plover-11
Semipalmated Plover-4
Piping Plover-31
Killdeer-4
Am. Oystercatcher-4
Lesser Yellowlegs-1
Willet-110
Spotted Sandpiper-1
Whimbrel-1
Ruddy Turnstone-6
Red Knot-1
Sanderling-7
Semipalmated Sandpiper-19
Western Sandpiper-15
Least Sandpiper-16
Dunlin-9
Short-billed Dowitcher-107
