Last Friday after the worst of the heat had broken and we had had a day
of lots of rain, a female Hummingbird came to one of my feeders and seemed
rather frantic for some food. She grabbed a position on the side at one of
the access flowers and started drinking vigorously. She looked so hungry
that I started counting the sips - and reached 82 - yes she dipped her bill
into the feeder and drank 82 times in succession - some of the drinks even
being quite long! I thought she may have been a migrant arriving after a
fairly long flight.
Yesterday I saw her again - this time she took only about a dozen drinks
before going away. A male is also around, and a female has been present
all summer - but this female acted much different than the one that has been
continuously here.
Hungry Hummer indeed!
