The correct way to contact Paul Sykes is paul underscore sykes at usgs dot
gov NOT paul underscore sykes at usgs com. My apologies for the error. He
needs photographs of Pileated Woodpecker furrow excavations, will pay for
them. I will try to get back on topic but to my mind news of someone who
is doing forensic, very strongly circumstantial, work that will help to
confirm the Arkansas (and other?) Ivory-billeds justifies occasionally
transcending strictly local bird news. Thank you for your forbearance.
Carl Perry forwarded to me yesterday some photographs of Paul working in
Arkansas last week and the diggings he is searching for and carefully
measuring, and also of a large Black Rat Snake shown ascending a big tree
vertically, not by going around the trunk. It must have been at least 60
feet up. I heard secondhand that one had eaten a young Mississippi Kite in
a nest 100 feet up. Thank you.-Harry Armistead, 523 E. Durham St.,
