This morning I birded the park (about 6:30-8) before work and tried the
maintenance yard area for the first time. I enjoyed it greatly despite
the odd setting. I oserved many chimney swifts (50+) foraging over the
open area (above canopy level); house wrens (2 or more, possibly a family
group); some typical residents (r-b woodpecker-1, flicker-1, downy wpkr-2,
pileated wpkr-1, hairy wpkr-1, C wrens-3, thrashers-2, mockingbird-1,
catbirds-numerous, titmouse-1, C chick., w-b nuthatch-2, wood thrush-1,
r-e vireo-3, Acadian f-1, pewee-3, goldfinch-3, house finch-2); and some
nice migrants: B oriole-1, redstart- 4-6, magnolia-2, b&w-1, w-palm-1,
prairie-1.
I also tried the picnic areas briefly after that, and saw more neotropics:
redstarts- 5-6, chestnut-sided 4-5, b&w-2, magnolia-1, Acad f-2, pewee-3,
various woodpeckers, r-e vireo-3, y-b cuckoo-1, b-b cuckoo-1. Nice views
of the adult b-b cuckoo, which at one point was in same tree with and near
the adult y-b cuckoo.
