This morning, for a change, Magnolia was not the most numerous warbler at
Rockburn Branch Park in Howard County. A very active, vocal flock of chickadees
and migrants greeted me at the parking lot and moved slowly down the path,
where I was able to stay with them for nearly an hour. Numbers and diversity were
not exceptional, but the birds were often very low and close, allowing some
stunning views. The warblers were:
TENNESSEE - 1 adult, preening 15 feet away, best look ever at this species
NASHVILLE - 1, another cooperative beauty
CHESTNUT-SIDED - 1 first fall female
MAGNOLIA - 5, incl. some nice adult males
BLACK-THROATED GREEN - 8-10, one male singing softly
BLACKBURNIAN - 1 female
REDSTART - 3
and others:
Broad-winged Hawk - 3
E Wood-Pewee - 3
WE Vireo - 2
Warbling Vireo - 1
RE Vireo - 2
House Wren - 6 at least, some singing. These have been very conspicuous
lately at Rockburn.
Scarlet Tanager - 1 female
RB Grosbeak - 1 female
