Look up and they will come.

It also helps to have a cold front move through during the night and strong
NNW winds in the morning.

In what may have been their final push of through Maryland, kettle after
kettle of Broadwings appeared in the north and streamed past Washington
Monument State Park at 40 mph early this morning. From 8:15‹9:00 a total of
112 raptors, mostly Broadwings, past the monument and from 9:00‹10:00
another 407 raptors including at least 385 Broadwings streamed by.

By 10:30, the wind had dropped off markedly and the last of the clouds were
gone, making the birds hard to pick out high against the blue sky. But it
was fun while it lasted.

This was Washington Monument State Park's best day for Broadwings this
season at least doubling the season's count.

In addition to the Broadwings, 6 Bald Eagles, several Sharp-shinned Hawks,
American Kestrels, Ospreys, and 1 Peregrine added to an already perfect
morning.

The Peregrine and some of the other birds may have been in Frederick County
as South Mountain, on which the monument is located is the dividing ridge
between the two counties.
