A lunchtime walk around the Mall produced a few interesting birds:
An Ovenbird in the Enid Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle.
A Catbird in the Mary Ripley Garden.
A Brown Thrasher by the WWII Memorial.
A large (female?) Red-tailed Hawk at the Vietnam Memorial.
The hawk was sitting low in a tree near the Memorial, within 20 feet of
the crowded sidewalk. It was holding a pigeon which it was beginning
to pluck.
Apparently I was the only one to notice it. After a few minutes it
flew
off with its prey.
