Paul Woodford and I were the only people foolhardy enough to show up for the
Saturday walk around Mt. Pleasant. Not surprisingly, given the steady rain
falling from a somber gray sky, very few birds were in evidence. We walked
down to the Davis Branch, up the East Branch, back to the Gudelski Center and
called it a day after an hour.
The Davis Branch was in spate and sheets of water lay everywhere in the
fields.
Species noted:
Mourning doves - 5
Blue jays - several
N. mockingbirds (3)
Gray catbird -1
E. bluebirds (ca. 4)
N. cardinalls - several
E. phoebe - 1
House finch -1
Goldfinches - several
probables:
song sparrow 1
golden-crowned kinglet (heard in larches near farmhouse)
chipping sparrows (heard near same)
Inspected the white-eyed vireo's nest in which I saw the male feeding young
earlier in the year (an Atlas confirmation). It is 4 ft up, at the tip a
branch from a dogwood.
Many deer seen.
