I got about an hour of birding in on Saturday working my way back
from Forest Ridge Elementary School into Savage Park. There were
lots of sparrows around, most of which were house and song sparrows,
but some of which I couldn't ID (sparrows are hard for me). One tree
held a male rufous-sided towhee that was chasing a cardinal and was
in turn being chased by a mockingbird. Blue jays, eastern phoebes,
and ruby-crowned kinglets were also about. The most interesting bird
was a winter wren, which I've only seen once before, in Maine. The
stubby little bird was foraging through the underbrush but gave me a
couple of good looks before disappearing for good.
