Hi Folks!
After consultation with a few others, I have come to the conclusion that the photographed cormorant is almost certainly a NEOTROPIC. The images however are not clear enough to provide crucial field marks for a final assessment.
Here are a few things to try to get:
(1) a profile in flight showing the extened tail and extended head and neck [photo or drawing]
(2) a sharp profile of the head showing the shape of the gape [photo or drawing]
(3) note the shapes of the back and scapular feathers [photo or drawing] as compared to obvious Double-crested Cormorants
(4) carefully note the shape of any white feathering on the head [photo or drawing]
(5) a count of the tail feathers
I plan to go out the weekend with notepad and several cameras. DOCUMENTATION for the MD?DC Records Committee is really needed to pin down the identification. Size alone is not sufficient.
Good Birding!
