I have often been accused of anthropomorphizing, but I get so tired of
hearing people say that animals (other than human animals) don't have
feelings.
The other day, I was walking through one of the pavillions at the inner
harbor in Baltimore, when I noticed a house sparrow trapped inside the
building, flying frantically from window to window. The male bird was
obviously focused on a tree outside the window and seemed very upset. My
eyes teared up as I watched him try to solve the invisible barrier. As much
as it pained me to watch him, I knew there wasn't much that I could do, so
sadly I continued on my walk. On my way back through the building, as I
headed back to work, I saw the bird again. This time he was perched in the
window face to face with a female sparrow. They both sat for quite a while,
beak to beak, just looking at each other. My heart broke. I tried, in vain,
to "shoo" the poor bird toward the door, but he flew off in the other
direction.
I know I am "preaching to the choir", but am I crazy in thinking that this
bird was sad? I SO wish I could have help him!
Is there any effort to release these trapped birds? What happens to birds
that get trapped in large buildings or stores like this? Does anyone know?
Then, maybe I don't want to know...
