Folks

Gwen and I took a friend from the evil empire of Virginia birding in lower Charles County today. We started at the house, then stopped at the Port Tobacco Court House, then to Allen's Fresh, and along to Morgantown.

Highlights:

House: Hermit Thrush - 3; two were singing a duet at dawn.
Purple Finch - fly over
Most of the usual suspects were around but the female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker did not appear before we headed out.

The court house: This spot can be very birdy in the morning.

Great Blue Heron
Black and Turkey Vultures
Canada Geese - ~55 - one suspect small bird
Red-shouldered Hawk
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
Belted Kingfisher
Blue Jay
American Crow
6 Eastern Bluebirds
2 Brown Thrasher
3 Northern Mockingbird
small flock Cedar Waxwings - Gwen only
15 Yellow-rumped Warblers
Eastern Towhee- 2
Song Sparrow - 2
White-throated Sparrow - 15
Red-winged Blackbird - 15
Common Grackle - 25
House Sparrow - 2

Allen's Fresh:

Great Blue Heron - 3
250 Canada Geese
Green-winged Teal - male, female
Black Duck - 1
Gadwall - female
First year Bald Eagle
Red-tailed Hawk
Peregrine Falcon - sub-adult flying over the east side of the Fresh.
10 Killdeer
Forster's Tern - 6
Barn Owl - private property
Field Sparrow- 1

Morgantown:

Common Loon - 3
Common Goldeneye - 1
Black Scoter - 3; not common along the river - male, female, maybe a subadult
White-winged Scoter* - 8; two adult males, the rest sub-adults or females. Way out. I am going back tomorrow in better light, and further down the river to get a better look (I hope). This is the second time I have had this species in Charles County. County listers take note.
Four species of gulls: Laughing, Ring-billed, Herring, Great Black-backed (~35)
Royal Tern - 3; late for down here.
Forster's Tern - 75
Fish Crow - 2
Kingfisher - 1

Nap time.
George
