A few years ago, there was a Kingfisher keeping territory south of the National Zoo and north of the P Street Bridge. The bird maintained that territory for several years, and then moved on. I hope it is back. A couple of good places to find it was the small bridge that crosses the creek on the bike trail under the Calvert St. bridge area and at the Edgewater Police Stables across Beach Dr.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Navy Yard Birds

Based on Mike's post yesterday on the MD-Osprey List,
I decided to do some lunchtime birding today at the
Washington Navy Yard. I spotted the following birds on
the pier on the port side of the display ship Barry
(DD 933):

--Herring Gull
--Laughing Gull
--Ring-billed Gull
--Great Black-Backed
--Double Crested Cormorant

In the Navy, sailors who don't serve on ships but work
at Navy Yards are often called "Yard Birds." I guess I
saw some real-life yard birds. There were NUMEROUS
gulls on the pier of all ages and I will have to
return and see if I can find a Lesser-Black Backed
Gulls that Mike mentioned in his post.

I was also spotted a Belted Kingfisher yesterday
morning at 0700 just inches above the Rock Creek near
Q Street. I've never seen a Kingfisher this close to
VA Avenue. Most of my BELTED KINGFISHER sightings have
been just below Military Road in the gorge section of
the park.
