Subject: Hurricane Wilma and Migrating birds

In Eastern Canada, following hurricane Wilma, thousand of birds that had left for their wintering grounds, were brought back north. Swifts and swallows were among the most numerous birds found. Unfortunately many birds were already dead or will eventually die because of poor body condition. Two Chimney Swifts found dead in Nova Scotia had lost more than 30% of their body weight.
As a result of this event we are trying to gather as much information as possible in order to better understand the effect of hurricanes and tropical storms on migrating bird populations. If you have any information regarding dead birds or unusual bird sittings in your region for this time of year, please contact us. Information should include species, numbers and state (dead or alive) of these birds along with any other pertinent information.

If you cannot provide any information regarding this situation and know of people who could, please forward them this e-mail.
Thank you for your time
Sincerely
