Ed Boyd and the rest of us lost the Hammond's
Flycatcher shortly after I got off the phone with Paul
O'Brien, so around 10:15 am. At about noon, I was
talking with two out of state birders, when one
noticed it maybe 20 feet from us, feeding on a berry,
a few feet above eye level and rather close to the
trail. It stayed right there for about a minute, then
flitted around for another minute or two before
vanishing. During this time it provided wonderful
views of the underside of its bill (short, thin, basal
portion orange and tip dark) as well as of its vest,
yellow on the belly, white eyering, etc. This was
just about the view I had been hoping for, the view
that drew me back for another morning.
