MD Osprey / Birdchat:
An Empidonax flycatcher, originally thought to be a Hammond's Flycatcher,
was found on 23 Nov 2005 by Hank Kaestner. After a few days of photography
and identification verification, the identity was confirmed. This is the
second record of this species from Maryland and one of just a few from the
east.

Dates: The bird was found on 23 Nov and was still present on Sunday, 27
Nov, at approximately 3:45 pm. It was seen at least three times on this
date; around 10 am, around noon, and around 2:40 pm.
Location: The bird is being seen on the National Capital Railroad Trail
(NCRT) in Monkton, MD, which is in Baltimore County, northeast of Baltimore
City. The NCR Trail parking lot is located on the north side of Monkton
Road a little east of where it crosses Gunpowder Falls, ADC 8B13 or DeLorme

Trail location: The bird is seen near a large abandoned stone building on
the east side of the trail about a half mile north of Monkton Road. All
sightings have been on the east side of the trail (the opposite side from
the river). The bird has been seen feeding on the berries in the first
berry tree 30-40 feet north of the building, immediately next to the trail.
It has also been seen in the mountain laurel behind and uphill from the
stone buildings; follow the small woods trail off of the main trail, along
the hillside, immediately north of the stone buildings, for about 30-40
yards and look uphill. The bird stays low to the ground and moves laterally
quite a bit. There may have been some other sightings further north and
south of this spot along the main trail, but most sightings seem to be in
this general area. The bird is rather tame and has allowed close approaches.
