Note that I did not use the word Flycatcher in the subject line. Ralph Wall
(VA) told me that AOL flagged my 11/27 update to his spam folder. I checked
mine and sure enough, there it was. Perhaps the word "flycatcher" triggered
the diversion. Use your imagination.
But the real reason for this post is to heap kudos on Hank Kaestner for
picking up this bird, making the correct ID and getting the word out promptly. He
deserves our heartfelt gratitude for allowing so many people to see such a
rarity. And as for the brief flirtation with the possibility that it was a
"Western"-type Flycatcher, I would note that when it appeared on 11/26 in full
sunlight, it looked quite brown with a yellow belly and greenish back and did
not give the gray head and shoulders effect I expected from seeing the photos.
And when viewed from below, the bill actually looked fairly long and broad,
not as tiny as it appears from the side and in most, but not all photos.
Seeing it cold, I might easily have called it a Western. Homework helps.
Besides, I have preached for years that if I had to choose between getting the
initial ID absolutely correct and getting other people to look at a bird, I would
choose the latter every time. The more eyes, the better.
Kaestner rocks!
