This morning I spotted a Peregrine, adult and probably a male, at
Kenilworth Park just inside the "wild" section past the barrier, perched
and scanning the flats for prey. On me he turned no less baleful an eye.
The resident Kestrel had apparently relinquished overlordship to his
more fearsome confrere and was nowhere to be seen. A lone Robin sought
to land in the same tree but spotting the falcon, thought better of it
and nimbly executed a mid-course correction. A passing flock of
Starlings proved a greater temptation and the Peregrine chased after
them. The flock immediately morphed into characteristic tight ball
formation, their instinctive counter to the falcon's strategy of
singling out an individual, as they zoomed up-river with the Peregrine
in pursuit.
Other species on site were few:
Canada Goose 0 (!)
Crows, mostly Fish 70
E. Bluebird 3
A. Robin 20
N. Mockingbird 2
C. Waxwing 80 (but ~200 last week)
Song Sparrow 5
