Arrived in Jim's yard at 7:30. the hummer put in appearances at 7:50, 8:30,
and 9:35 for me (I wandered the boardwalk and coffied up across the street
between each sighting) Kudos and thanks to Jim for the sighting, the feeder
and the chairs. I had some decent looks at the bird and got enough notes to
satisfy myself that it was a Selasphorus. I'll trust the experts specific
identification.
From the boardwalk and along Atlantic Street I had nice sightings of 2
Oldsquaw (I'm unreconstructed), lots of Black Scoters, 2 White-winged Scoters, a
ton of Bufflehead and the delightful overflight of about 25 Tundra Swans.
Their call gives me the wanderlust.
Stopped at Schoolhouse Pond in Upper Marlboro on the way home and spent half
an hour or more trying to decide whether I really was or was not looking at
a 3rd to 4th year Thayer's gull (adult primaries, sub-adult bill, just a hint
of remaining brown in wing coverts, slightly darker gray mantle than nearby
Herring Gulls, extremely heavy dark streaking on head, nape and upper breast
otherwise white underparts.) I'd appreciate any opinions if anyone is up
that way (and if it sticks around).
It was a beautiful morning to be on the bay.
