Hello All,
As previously posted on DE birds, I found a Ross' Goose and a Cackling Goose on 12/8 to push my year total at Oak Grove to a new high of 155. Having accomplished that goal, I set out to get a good comprehensive count for December. I found those to be lacking a recent review of past records since December counts are limited by CBC obligations and/or travel. I was able to tally 44 species and record 2 new high counts.
I began the morning on North Oak Grove Rd, south of Oak Grove proper, where I can scan to the southeast. But the only thing to be found were Snow Geese, mainly distant to the SW. No other geese, gulls or more exotic things. I moved on to the farm were the highlight was flocks of 8 and 4 towhees plus scattered singles to make a new high count of 15. I found 2 Fox Sp. and 1 Field Sp. along with the usual Songs and WTs in the cutoff woods (MD). Geese were flying overhead in all directions late in the morning. I was scanning the dark geese looking for Cackling. Instead I find a Ross Goose in a line of Snows. It had no neck and 2/3 the wingspan of the birds around it (MD). I then flushed a Wilson's Snipe from the ditchbank (DE). Also, A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and an immature White-crowned Sparrow visited the feeder (DE). Finally, 2 stops on Kinder Rd (MD) produced 4 Hermit Thrush each. Combined with other singles this was a new high count of 13 Hermit Thrush. It made me think about Muddy Hole Rd in its prime.
Good Birding,
