Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery County, Zion Road Section, 1 Jan 06,
1100-1200

My wife and I took our pooch for a late morning walk around the BMNT. Best
bird was what appeared to be a leucistic Am. Tree Sparrow foraging with a
mixed flock of Tree and Field Sparrows along the back loop near the pile of
large PVC pipes.

Due to the coloration, I first thought Snow Bunting but upon closer
inspection the characteristics of Tree Sparrow became apparent. The rufous
cap was present along with a very pale breast and signature dark spot.
However, the back was buffy brown and mottled with white. The completely
white tail feathers were striking, especially when the bird flew.

On a cautionary note, we picked at least a dozen ticks off of our all white
dog when we returned home. It seems winter weather doesn't hold these nasty
creatures at bay.
