A number of people have asked me about access to the Washington Navy Yard for birders. I finally spoke to Karin Kill of the US Navy Museum. She informed me that birding is permissible on the base (with a few minor caveats, which she will explain). To gain access to the base for birding, please e-mail ((202) 433-4995) and she will explain the base bird watching rules and put you on a guest list. For more information:

Binoculars are permissible, but Karin was unsure about spotting scopes. She will contact base security about the scope issue. A scope would be very useful for spotting birds that hang out along the Anacostia Naval Station levies, but ask Karin about them first before bringing one.

Also, Karin wants to develop a Washington Navy Yard bird list, so if you could e-mail your sightings to her, it would be most appreciated.
